Report: Iraqi Army commander in Diyala fired, suspected of 'getting bribes and cooperating with armed groups'

Diala, May 25, (VOI)- The commander of the 5th Division of the Iraqi army stationed in Diala province was sacked and referred to trial, an Iraqi army source said on Friday.

"Commander of the 5th Division of the Iraqi army in Diala province General Shaker Helayl al-Kaabi was sacked," the source, who asked not to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

"He is suspected of getting bribes and cooperating with armed groups in the area," he also said, noting that the decision of sacking him was made by the Iraqi judicial authorities.

"He will appear before the court after completing all legal procedures," the source stated.

The general assumed his post in 2005.

Baaquba is the capital city of Diala province and is located 57 km northeast of Baghdad.
